Houses were privatised after the fall of communism, yet many times this was a messy process. In the case of “our” Centre (“The locals call it “Taverno”), the ground floor is privatised, but the 1st floor isn’t. Even so people lived there, they never purchased it, and it is not clear now, if the state has still ownership. Without a clear knowledge about its legal documents we will not proceed with the purchase,; it has happened that a church bought a place and then they were trapped, because somebody else also claimed ownership for the building!
We were also advised to start our first co-workers school by putting students into different flats rather than a centre. This way will won’t take on too much financially. But living in flats will give each person a place of responsibility, something we want to encourage in post-communist Albania.
We still believe that we should have a centre one day and the Taverno seems to be the ideal place for that, yet we are aware this would need a divine breakthrough.
